Serendipity? Synchronicity! Oh yeah!

Who would think a cheeky comment would lead to the unravelling of a story so unreal, that you wouldn’t believe it, if had been made in Hollywood!

I’ve always admired those playful though wise men and women classified as senior citizens. I don’t know if it’s because I feel I have an older soul or because I enjoy their youthful spirit coupled with their wisdom. Whichever it be, I love them!

After checking if the couple I met yesterday were eligible for the seniors discount, with a cheeky smile, the husband said that he was but his wife wasn’t. When I asked, “Did you snatch her out of her cradle?” it opened a story too serendipitous to be true.

In the heart of rural Australia, their forbidden love was put to a stop by her father, when she was only 15 years old. He was 21 and heart broken. Further to the pain, her family moved away and the couple lost contact. His eyes were wide with excitement, when he told me they found each other on an internet dating site and got married 2 years ago. He is now 65 and she is 59 years old.

“So you were apart for that long?” I asked. “Yes and I never stopped loving her. Even though we both married and divorced twice during that time, we never stopped loving each other,” he said.

This is where their story got interesting. Over a span of 40 years, this couple had lived in half of the Australian states and many of it’s cities. The same ones at the same time! They recounted city after city and street names within those cities. “Every couple of months, we discover another time where our paths almost crossed but didn’t. Like the time we lived a street apart in Brisbane. I remember having this desire to move to Brisbane that I couldn’t explain. It was like the universe kept trying to bring us together. We know we were meant to be!”

Their relocations happened so synchronistically, yet they never met each time. Until a couple of years ago when they both lived in South Australia again. It was an internet dating site they connected through.

“Even though we had lived through so much, it was like time hadn’t passed for either of us,” she said. Although they lived a couple of hours apart this time, like a sign from the heavens, she had a family event she had to attend … in his town! Could you get any more symbolic than that?!

There was an element of their story which tugged at me, so I boldly asked, “Do you think that if you had been more in tune with your instincts that you would’ve met earlier? You followed your desire to move to Brisbane, but maybe you didn’t listen to a push to go for a walk because you felt tired after work -” “And maybe I was walking down the street at that same time and would’ve crossed paths,” she finished my thought, knowingly.

Then I realised the reason I met this couple … because we all need reminders to follow our instincts and embrace the synchronistic things that happen to us every day. Some people say something “is just a coincidence”, while many of us know they are meaningful. Carl Jung wrote about it. Sting sang about it. We all experience it. Open your eyes and listen. Sometimes a road sign is a sign if you listen to your gut instincts.
